Fall 2023 Wine-Share
Happy fall, y’all. Wine-Share!
Before we get into the wines, we want to take space in this letter and thank our share members. We are a small, scrappy company, doing our own farming and trying to push the envelope of winegrowing in this country. We take financial risks with our lighter touch, experimental viticulture and our minimalist winemaking. We’re planting new varieties that look to be better suited to Virginia, but you won’t see their names on grocery store bottles. This adds up to wines that we are proud of, and Midland is a soul fulfilling endeavor for sure, BUT the business side of things would not make sense if it weren’t for your support. Much like a CSA, you are directly contributing to the work on the farm and in the winery, and we thank you for that!
Now how about those wines? We have our final red wine of the 2021 vintage, Cabernet Franc, as well as our 2021 Chardonnay and an enigmatic Riesling; more on that in the wine notes.
For the next few years, we are making it a “tradition” that we give you one bottling of sparkling wine in both Spring and Fall shipments. This accomplishes a few things: we guarantee a bottle of sparkling in every share (very nice), you get to taste the evolution of each wine with some bottle age, and it allows us to push the aging in the bottle an extra year for each successive vintage. That last one is the main reason we’re doing it. Think about it. The sparkling in this share has 18 months on the barrel lees and three years on the bottle lees. That’s a lot, but what if it were in the bottle for five years? We’re going to find out, and it’s going to be fun.
Finally, we invite you to visit the Common Wealth Crush Co. tasting room in Waynesboro. The winery has become the home of Midland’s wine production, and the tasting room operates like a wine bar, showcasing tastes, glasses and bottles of wines that CWC hopes represent the future of wine in our state, on this coast, and in this country. You can schedule with us to pick up your share there, you’ll always find Midland wines there, and for sure you’ll find wines there that ask different questions and provide different answers.
Thank you, as always, for your support, and please enjoy these wines!
