Fall 2021 Wine-Share

We are excited to share a trio of wines that represent the dynamic nature of our growing conditions, as well as the collaborative work that is essential to our evolution as winegrowers.

Our 2019 Blaufränkisch is in the box with our red label 2020 Cabernet Fränkisch. The two vintages are polar opposites, with 2020 being lighter and more delicate, while 2019 is a dark and powerful expression of what we can do. The 2019s have needed extra time in bottle, and the 2020s are for drinking now.

We also have our first ever collaboration across the Atlantic, a dry Riesling from the Mosel in Germany, from a warm vintage that allowed for dry wine in a region that is traditionally known for off dry Rieslings.

Finally, while we had hoped for an in-person release party this fall, we are reticent to pack a bunch of folks into our small space, so we are tabling the larger attendance events for now. We are still available for tastings and pickup by appointment, and we are working on a long-term solution that will allow us to gather for releases going forward.

Thank you for your continued support, and we hope that you have an enjoyable, wine-filled holiday season.

The Jordan Family

NOTES

2018 Dry Riesling, Briedeler Herzchen, Mosel, Germany, Wallflower Wines

Our first collab from abroad! This is the result of a trip to Europe that Tim took with a good friend of ours, Nicolas Mestre. Not only did Tim return inspired to soften our approach in the vineyard, but he met with Gernot Kollmann, who would help craft this wine from the Briedeler Herzchen vineyard. We love Riesling, and we tend to make it dry, so this fits right in with our style. 2018 was a warm and dry vintage in this part of the world, and the result is not unlike our 2019, dry in style, with plenty of acidity and concentration.

What should I use this wine for? You know those seafood towers with crab legs, lobster, shrimp and bivalves? That sounds delicious with this wine, and it sounds like something that would make any holiday table more festive.

2019 Blaufränkisch, Mount Airy Vineyard, Shenandoah Valley

We are excited by the potential of this grape in the Shenandoah Valley, and we have one of the first plantings in the state. We wish we had planted more. We incorporated 40% whole cluster to compliment the inherent black and white pepper character of the grape. It aged in used 500L French oak puncheon until unfiltered bottling. The result is dark fruited, dense, layered, and distinctively aromatic.

What should I use this wine for? The 2019 has quite a bit more concentration than the previous vintage, making it able to dive into the roasts, stews, and rich foods of the winter season. Roast chicken in particular would love to hang out with this wine. Or turkey, I suppose we should mention turkey, but honestly we will save this for more focused meals and use the 2020 Cabernet Fränkisch for the big, sprawling feasts.

2020 Cabernet Fränkisch (red label), Mount Airy Vineyard, Shenandoah Valley

Wow, 2020 was a wild year for pretty much everything, and that includes grape growing. First came the frost, then came the rains, and by the time we picked fruit, there was very little of it. So, we elected to ferment our Cabernet Franc and Blaufränkisch together. We put a red label on this one, poking fun at where 2020 took our vineyard finances … into the red. It is also to set apart the 2020 wines from what we normally bottle; the red labels are lighter in weight and texture, and we have priced them accordingly. The result is juicy wine that we can drink right away, similar in style to crushable/chillable reds and the lighter side of Beaujolais.

What should I use this wine for?  This. Is. The. Wine. You. Want. For. The. Holidays. Or any feast where you need to pace yourself, when powerful, heavy reds will lay you out on the couch. This will flex across all those crazy flavors, and you’ll have the energy to make it to 10pm leftovers.
